I think Charles Dickens was on his way back to London from Paris when the train he was on crashed down a ravine when it left the tracks, an out bridge I am also thinking. In Dan Simmons’ book, Drood, Charles helped in the rescue effort as he could. There he met Mr. Drood in Simmons’ book. Drood is the name of Charles last novel, never finished. Really good reading I though.
