Day 120 – In ruins

Sommeries castle ruins

“Ruins are the cathedrals of Time.” ~ Marty Rubin

This is Sommeries Castle in Hertfordshire. Despite its name it was not actually a castle but a fortified manor house that was built in the 1430’s. It is most notable for the fact that it is regarded as the first brick buildings to be constructed in England, prior to that stone had been the material of choice for building. Most of the building has been lost over time but the remains of the gatehouse which housed the chapel and lodge still stand, albeit in ruins.
