“Sometimes, when I walk along the corridor here, I fancy I hear her just behind me. That quick, light footstep. I could not mistake it anywhere…It’s almost as though I catch the sound of her dress sweeping the stairs as she comes down to dinner. Do you think she can see us, talking to one another now? Do you think the dead come back and watch the living?” ~ Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
This is actually Burghley House in Lincolnshire and whilst not being a Gothic in design in the right light it definitely has some of those haunting qualities of such a building. The house was built for Sir William Cecil in 1558–1587, who was Lord High Treasurer to Elizabeth I and is still owned by descendants of the Cecil family to this day. It is a vast estate with lands that spread for miles but the beautiful house sits with pride of place in the midst of it. It is open to the public and if you ever get the chance it is definitely worth a visit.
This is an awesome photo! I mean the house itself is impressive, I am certain, but your edit of the photo – excellent!
