Day 144 – Photographing photographers

“Taking pictures is savoring life intensely, every hundredth of a second.” ~ Marc RiboudI am a member of my local camera club. We met from September to May and there is a variety of different activities. Some weeks there are competitions, some weeks outside speakers and some week members run sessions. It has definitely been a good experience but I am not sure how long I will continue to go as I think the overwhelming number of competitions are on the verge of getting a bit boring but I shall certainly do at least one more year. However one of…

Voyeur through a tunnel

Day 143 – Voyeur

“Voyeurs have an open window on the world.”  ~ Ljupka Cvetanova  I am a voyeur and this is even more the case when I have my camera in hand. I watch and see but what I do more than anything else is I try to capture the world that I experience within my image. Sometimes I stumble upon image that just appear to be waiting for me and this one perfect example. This is a tunnel that goes over the Motorway and connects the two service stations on each side. When I stepped into it the light, the people, the…

Bus top with man walking past, walk in London

Day 139 – Walk Out

"No city should be too large for a man to walk out of in a morning." ~ Cyril Connolly   In which London is too large but I like it that way. Sprawling and giant, it is constantly alive, no matter what time of day or night it is. There is plenty of opportunity to walk as well but luckily the bus and tube train system while confusing to non Londoners is extensive. I had to wait a little while to get this shot as London is not a quiet city and there were was a constant stream of people…

Day 124 – key Holder

"You have a fancy ride, but baby I'm the one who has the key" ~ Soak up the Sun by Sheryl Crow This is my husbands arm on the steering wheel of our car. As you can see he has a key tattoo on his wrist but what you can not see is that I have the corresponding lock tattooed on my wrist.

Men sitting by pond fishing taking in serenity

Day 118 – Fishing for serenity

"There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." ~ Washington Irving I guess this must be the case but fishing is something that I just do not get. I understand the solitude, the quiet, the peace etc but just sitting there would not work for me. I need something to do or else I get bored and irritable and I am pretty sure sitting and staring at the water hoping that something might happen at some point would drive me bonkers. Each to their own though, if fishing is your thing, I hope…

People sitting silent on the London underground

Day 109 – Silent Underground

"Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it." ~ Greg Anderson I have discovered that there is a huge difference between how people behave on the Tube (Subway) in London compared to how they behave on the subway in Philadelphia. In London the place is like a library. I am not exaggerating, everyone tends to sit (or stand if it's busy) very quietly. There is sometimes a low hum of conversation but often even couples and groups fall silent. In Philly I discovered that people happily chat away not…

Day 102 – Experiment

"I have always had an instinct for doing new things. Call it good or bad, I love to experiment." ~ Ravi Shankar I love to experiment with my photography. I am not sure it is ever possible to feel like to have taken enough pictures and with the invention of digital editing the experimentation can go on well after the initial image has been taken. Not that you could not also do that in the dark room days but accessibility to that kind of thing for most people was just a dream. This image is in fact two images. One…

Day 99 – London Life

London: "It is the biggest aggregation of human life – the most complete compendium of the world.” ~ Henry James This picture was taken in a part of London that I call home, even though I sadly do not live here any more. I grew up in Kentish Town and my parents still live there. Like much of London the cost of housing is astronomical and being able to afford to live there is but a dream at the moment but one day, maybe, I will get to live again in the city that I always think of as home.…

Close up shot of a beautiful mans chin

Day 95 – Something beautiful

"The singular point of beautiful objects, and people, is that they are experienced not as parts, or ratios between cheekbones and chin, but as wholes. The experience of beauty is a perception, but it is one that mixes up various other sensations and makes them converge in a particular way." ~ Charles Jencks We always tend to think of women when we use the word beauty or beautiful but I think that is the result of women's value being so focus on how they look not who and what they are rather than on any actual truths. Men are beautiful…

Swirl of text on paper with pen writing words

Day 94 – Swirl of words

“I love writing. I love the swirl and swing of words as they tangle with human emotions.” ~ James A. Michener This is my daughters hand. She is an excellent artist and writing curly swirly script is one of the her favourite things to do. When I asked her to help me create this image she would not let me take any images until she had designed out what she was going to do and then she spent ages finishes the words even after I had taken the picture I wanted.
