girl in the river summer afternoon

Day 201 – Summer afternoon

"Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language." ~ Henry James I hate to say it in case I jinx it but summer, real proper summer seems to have finally arrived. The windows are open wide, the sun shines, the warm air swirls around in one of those perfect summertime breezes that just does enough to stop it being too hot. This, this is my weather heaven. Long may it last.

Day 193 – Teen angst

“Maybe it's just a daughter's job to piss off her mother.” ~ Chuck Palahniuk I am not convinced it is about gender so much as generations. I know I pissed of my Mother at times, just as she pissed off me. Now with my own children I play the same game but this time I am the Mother. I think that is families and the key to the whole thing, especially all the teen angst is never give up on each other and be open to communication.

Young girl sitting in a field of buttercups that little cups of gold

Day 185 – Cups of gold

"Buttercups in the sunshine look like little cups of gold. Perhaps the Faeries come to drink the raindrops that they hold." ~Elizabeth T. Dillingham I stumbled across this field of gold when I was out with my daughter. Luckily she was more than happy to plonk herself down in the middle of it and play model. The sun really was bright though and as a result she kept having to close her eyes because it was making them water and I was asking her not to squint. Despite that I think it works, she looks like she is lost in…

Day 183 – Throwing Shadows

"Time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind." ~ Nathaniel Hawthorne They are often called the golden hours with regards to photography and they take place around sunrise and sunset. The light is softer, with gentle gold or pink tones in it and of course everywhere there are shadows being thrown around. This is sunset, well not quite, but nearly, people are heading home, their shadow hurrying along behind them oblivious to the lady with the camera for whom the time of day is a gift.

mans fingers on guitar strings hit me with music

Day 178 – Making music

"One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain." Bob MarleyI love it when my husband reaches for his guitar. There is something wonderfully sexy about watching him play. The way he cradles the instrument, how his fingers move and glide to create music and the intense look of concentration that plays across his face is all a delight to watch. The music he makes is just the icing on the cake as far as I am concerned. In the truly dark days that we have experienced in the UK this week, sometimes a simple pleasure…

Girl jumping in wave on beach at sunset Tunisia as they come ashore

Day 176 – Waves ashore

“Waves are the voices of tides. Tides are life," murmured Niko. "They bring new food for shore creatures, and take ships out to sea. They are the ocean's pulse, and our own heartbeat.” ~ Tamora Pierce Jumping over waves as they come ashore is one of the simple pleasures in life. You always know when something is that because children indulge in it instinctively. However for reasons I have never really understood when we become adults we have a tendency to forget them, or take them for granted, or be so busy in our lives that we just don't indulge…

Day 161 – Freshly Cut

"I love the smell of freshly cut grass. It takes me back to summers in Maine." ~ Rachel NicholsNo summers on Maine for me instead they were spent in very rural Sussex with my Grandparents. They had a huge lawn, in fact they had a huge garden with little winding paths, Chickens and Pheasants, which my Grandfather breed, a pond, greenhouses and variety of dilapidated but picturesque sheds. They grew flowers and vegetables. Huge blousey roses scented the air and rows of Dahlia's filled the space with colour and then there was the lawn. Large and green and mowed in…

Day 152 – Let’s Ride

"I want to ride my bicycle bicycle bicycle I want to ride my bicycle I want to ride my bike I want to ride my bicycle I want to ride it where I like" ~ Bicycle Race by Queen Taken in central London this are often referred to as Boris Bikes because it was one of the few great ideas that the former mayor of London, Boris Johnson, implemented and as a result you can find banks of these bikes all over the city that you can hire, ride around on and return to any of the docking stations.

Day 144 – Photographing photographers

“Taking pictures is savoring life intensely, every hundredth of a second.” ~ Marc RiboudI am a member of my local camera club. We met from September to May and there is a variety of different activities. Some weeks there are competitions, some weeks outside speakers and some week members run sessions. It has definitely been a good experience but I am not sure how long I will continue to go as I think the overwhelming number of competitions are on the verge of getting a bit boring but I shall certainly do at least one more year. However one of…

Voyeur through a tunnel

Day 143 – Voyeur

“Voyeurs have an open window on the world.”  ~ Ljupka Cvetanova  I am a voyeur and this is even more the case when I have my camera in hand. I watch and see but what I do more than anything else is I try to capture the world that I experience within my image. Sometimes I stumble upon image that just appear to be waiting for me and this one perfect example. This is a tunnel that goes over the Motorway and connects the two service stations on each side. When I stepped into it the light, the people, the…

Bus top with man walking past, walk in London

Day 139 – Walk Out

"No city should be too large for a man to walk out of in a morning." ~ Cyril Connolly   In which London is too large but I like it that way. Sprawling and giant, it is constantly alive, no matter what time of day or night it is. There is plenty of opportunity to walk as well but luckily the bus and tube train system while confusing to non Londoners is extensive. I had to wait a little while to get this shot as London is not a quiet city and there were was a constant stream of people…
