Daffodils in a vase

Day 44 – Optimistic

“Daffodils are an optimistic flower, and foolproof. You know what Shakespeare said: "Daffodils, That come before the swallow dares, and take The winds of March with beauty." ~ Tasha Tudor There are no daffodils in my garden yet but I can see their buds poking up through the grass rising to the challenge of the forthcoming spring weather. In the meantime I anticipate their arrival by purchasing a bunch of them to bring their joyful yellow blooms into the house.

Frost covered leaves and grass. A taste of winter

Day 30 – Taste of Winter

"Do not wish an everlasting spring! Without tasting the winter, you cannot get pleasure out of the spring!" ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan Despite still not having any snow here we are never the less definitely getting a good long taste of winter. Morning after morning there has been a thick frost often accompanied by mist and fog but sometimes turning into bright crisp days. The up side of all this is that so far we have not had a great deal of rain but this is England and spring is hopefully coming and with it, I suspect, all the rain.…

Day 25 – Spider Trap

“I excel at pulling strings!” said Arachne. “I’m a spider!” ~ Rick RiordanNo one pulls strings quite like a Spider because there string pulling is in my opinion an intricate form art form that not only sets a trap for their prey but decorates our world with something truly beautiful. The spider and his web is nature at it most skillful, clever and beautiful.

Day 19 – Glisten

"Into each life some rain must fall." ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow We know all about rain in the UK. If there was such a thing as a national weather surely ours would be rain. Mostly it is annoying as it brings days and days of dark grey skies that seem to push down on the land but sometimes rain is a beautiful thing. The smell of summer rain at the end of a warm day for example, or a beautiful rainbow or the blue sky reflected in a puddle once the clouds are past or in this case, decorating the…

Day 354 – Sparkle and Glisten

"I'm dreaming of a white Christmas, Just like the ones I used to know, Where the tree tops glisten And children listen To hear sleigh bells in the snow..." ~ Irving Berlin I wish soooo hard that we would have a white Christmas here in the UK but it never happens. In fact where I live near London we have not had any proper snowfall for a couple of years now. I am a big winter fan but I do like the snow so I will continue to hope for some in 2017, after all, winter has a while to…

Black and White of gladioli bloom, delight for the soul

Day 345 – Delight for the soul

“To see in color is a delight for the eye but to see in black and white is a delight for the soul.” – Andri Cauldwell Sometimes the light makes a thing even more beautifully perfect than it already is. If you are very lucky you capture that moment in your camera.

Day 342 – Crystal gems

"December drops no weak, relenting tear, By our fond summer sympathies ensnared; Nor from the perfect circle of the year Can even winter's crystal gems be spared." ~ Christopher Pearse Cranch

Day 333 – Fabulous Pink

"I think everyone loves a slash of red lipstick." ~ Gwendoline Christie I don't wear makeup very often but I do like a bit of fabulous lipstick now and then. This is one of my favourites, It is actually more pink than red, in fact it is a shimmery shiny pink. Not all fabulous lipstick is red you know.

Day 331 – Wood wide web

“Trees live in symbiosis with hyphae (fungus/mold roots). A tea spoon of dirt contains kilometers of these roots. One species can spread throughout entire forests over centuries. They exchange nutrients with trees, along with information about insects, drought and other dangers. It's like a 'wood wide web'.” ~ Peter Wohlleben

Day 328 – Seeds of change

"The seed of everything is in everything else." ~ Anaxagoras What I love about these seeds, because that is essentially what they are, is that they look like little lumps of wood. They are so shiny and smooth when they first burst out of their protective shells but over time they nestle down into the grass and the brown wood-like skin eventually splits open so that roots can form downwards and a shoot appears not long after growing upwards towards the sky. Sadly many of these trees are under threat in the UK from both disease but also development of…

Day 325 – Small wonders

"The world is full of magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper." ~ Bertrand Russell Sometimes you have to get down on your hands and knees to see them properly though. Because down on the ground there are small wonders waiting to be discovered, mini little worlds of life waiting to be discovered. You just have to get down into their worlds with them to really see their true beauty.

Day 322 – Indoor soul

"Every flower is a soul blossoming in nature." ~ Gerard De Nerval Right now nature is taking a bit of a winter break. I am not a big one for buying cut flowers but now and then you just need to bring a bit of colour and life into things especially when there is so little of it out in the garden.
