Yellow dandelion flower weed in the garden

Day 136 – Delightful Weed

"What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have never been discovered." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson The Dandelion remains a weed and yet are we really oblivious to this plants beauty. It has bright yellow flowers with an abundance of tiny petals that fan out making it look like a golden star growing on the earth and then that flower turns into a seed head that has delighted each and everyone of us as children and a fair few of us as adults. Can you really resist the temptation to blow its seeds and watch them scatter. Maybe the dandelion…

Day 135 – Delightful Daisy

"So let's enjoy the unfolding shape, the elemental, organic delight and agony of it all.” ~ Natalie Goldberg This a Daisy. My front garden lawn is awash with them. Even though we mow they spring back up. They are indestructible and I adore the delightful little things. I can't understand people who weed them out of their lawn. For me they are part of having a lawn and there is nothing quite like sitting in the sun and making a daisy chain from them.

Day 133 – May Blue

"'Tis like the birthday of the world, When earth was born in bloom; The light is made of many dyes, The air is all perfume: There's crimson buds, and white and blue, The very rainbow showers Have turned to blossoms where they fell, And sown the earth with flowers." ~ Thomas Hood These beautiful Bluebells are growing in my garden right outside the door which I can see from my desk. As I work I can see them nodding in the May breeze and beyond them the rest of the garden is springing into action and every feels alive.  …

Day 115 – Orchid Fever

“Many collectors died in process of searching for new species, and despite persistent reports that the men died from drowning, gunshot and knife wounds, snakebite, trampling by cattle, or blows in the head with blunt instruments, it is generally accepted that in each case the primary cause of death was orchid fever.” ~ Eric Hansen

Day 114 – Without insects

"Without insects, there'd be no flowering plants. Without flowering plants, there would be no clever, fruit-eating primates giving TED Talks." Michael Dickinson

Day 95 – Something beautiful

"The singular point of beautiful objects, and people, is that they are experienced not as parts, or ratios between cheekbones and chin, but as wholes. The experience of beauty is a perception, but it is one that mixes up various other sensations and makes them converge in a particular way." ~ Charles Jencks We always tend to think of women when we use the word beauty or beautiful but I think that is the result of women's value being so focus on how they look not who and what they are rather than on any actual truths. Men are beautiful…

Day 88 – Faded

“And all the winds go sighing, For sweet things dying” ~ Christina Rossetti“ Even in its last moments a flower can still be a beautiful thing. This is a single Hyacinth bloom, curled and faded, its pretty white gone, its scent just a memory. It is a shadow of its former self and yet it lingers in a new state somewhere between death and life.

Day 81 – Favourite

"But we never lose the old favorites. They're always with us. We just sort of accumulate them.” ~ Lloyd Alexander I have many favourite things but when it comes to flowers Daffodils are my favourite spring flower and probably my favourite flower overall. There is just something so wonderfully cheery about them. Even on a grey spring day they sit up bold and bright in my garden like little sunshine's glowing at the world around them. Last year I planted lots of them in the grass in my front garden. They look lovely now but I have realised that to…

Day 74 – Stubborn

“Never try to out-stubborn a cat.” ~ Robert A. Heinlein This gloriously stubborn and utterly self absorbed creature lives in our house with us and goes by the name of Mr Wawa (yes we named him after the chain of convenience stores in PA) He has some other names though, Intheway and Rude, being the two main ones because well, I think they speak for themselves really.
