Black white self portrait of the nape of molly's neck

Day 170 – The Nape

“my love is a winter’s mist gently dissolving through the window at the nape of your neck.” ~ Sanober Khan In case you are wondering this a self portrait. I take a lot of them. This one was part of a series that I took one evening using just a simple soft light from a lamp. I loved the way it created darkness and shadows but of course the trick if getting the ISO right to avoid having too much noise in the image. I spent rather a long time working on it but got a result I was pleased…

London building brutalist style

Day 163 – Brutalist

"Brutalist architecture arouses passion and fury in equal measure. Of all the styles of housing in London, none is more polarising." ~ Kate Watson-Smyth It is easy to look at this building, a perfect example of Brutalistic architecture, and see something ugly. It is harsh and rough and imposing and yet, or maybe because of that, I find something hugely appealing about it. It is unapologetic, function over form, and that grittiness feels powerful and strong to me. Brutalist architecture flourished in post war London with the need for rebuilding and more housing. Many of those buildings are now in a…

Solar panel tree in Bristol City phone charging point

Day 156 – Solar Art

"The use of solar energy has not been opened up because the oil industry does not own the sun." ~ Ralph NaderThis fabulous solar tree sits in Bristol City Centre looking like a piece of modern public art, which it is, but it also has a use. At the base of it are a series of plugs, protected from the rain by little hoods, that you can plug your phone charger into and recharge your battery for free using the power generated by the tree that rises up into the sky above your head. Now that is what I call…

Lucky Lucy Hastings fishing boat

Day 153 – Lucy at sea

There is nothing more enticing, disenchanting, and enslaving than the life at sea. ~ Joseph Conrad  This is the Lucky Lucy and despite the fact she looks like a pleasure boat she is in fact part of the Hastings Fishing Fleet. She does stand out though and most of them look like the traditional trawlers that you would expect but Lucy looks more like she should be offering rides not casting nets. However her winged companions seem to hint that she is heading back into port with a good catch on board.

Day 149 – Taking the train

“My heart is warm with the friends I make, And better friends I'll not be knowing, Yet there isn't a train I wouldn't take, No matter where it's going.” ~ Edna St. Vincent Millay

Roller coaster Dorney Park rise and fall

Day 142 – Rise and fall

“With peaks of joy and valleys of heartache, life is a roller coaster ride, the rise and fall of which defines our journey. It is both scary and exciting at the same time.” ~ Sebastian Cole I don't like roller coasters. It is just not my kind of excitement however my children love the damn things but they don't seem to mind my lack of participation as I am always happy to be the 'looker after' of everyone's stuff whilst they go and defy the laws of gravity.

Day 135 – Delightful Daisy

"So let's enjoy the unfolding shape, the elemental, organic delight and agony of it all.” ~ Natalie Goldberg This a Daisy. My front garden lawn is awash with them. Even though we mow they spring back up. They are indestructible and I adore the delightful little things. I can't understand people who weed them out of their lawn. For me they are part of having a lawn and there is nothing quite like sitting in the sun and making a daisy chain from them.

Black and White edit of cherry tree blossom april month

Day 128 – One Month

"The sun was warm but the wind was chill. You know how it is with an April day. When the sun is out and the wind is still, You're one month on in the middle of May. But if you so much as dare to speak, a cloud come over the sunlit arch, And wind comes off a frozen peak, And you're two months back in the middle of March." -  Robert Frost Oh how true these words are. One moment there is warm sunshine and it feels like the world is welcoming and the next the clouds come and…

Burthgley house in black and white edit haunting gothic building

Day 121 – Haunting

"Sometimes, when I walk along the corridor here, I fancy I hear her just behind me. That quick, light footstep. I could not mistake it anywhere...It's almost as though I catch the sound of her dress sweeping the stairs as she comes down to dinner. Do you think she can see us, talking to one another now? Do you think the dead come back and watch the living?" ~ Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier This is actually Burghley House in Lincolnshire and whilst not being a Gothic in design in the right light it definitely has some of those haunting…
